To familiarize the students with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders.

To explain neuropsychology and psychopathology to students.

To enable the students understand the process of clinical intervention.


Block 1: Foundations of Clinical Psychology
Unit-1 Clinical Psychology: Nature and development, activities of Clinical Psychologists, Clinical Psychology and other related fields, difference between abnormal and clinical psychology
Unit-2 Professional training, professional regulation and professional ethics
Unit-3 Methods of study in clinical Psychology, Clinical Assessment: Clinical interview, case history, mental state examination

Block 2: Diagnosis and Treatment
Unit-4 Diagnosis: Meaning and purpose of classification, DSM-IV: classification of abnormality
Unit-5 Psychotherapy: meaning and nature, models of intervention, psychoanalytic therapy
Unit-6 Behavior therapy: systematic desensitization, cognitive behavior therapies, client centered and Gestalt, existential

Block 3: Neuropsychology
Unit-7 Central Nervous System: anatomy and classification, Ventricular system and meninges, Electrophysiological procedures: EEG and EP scanning and imagining of brain- CT, MRI, PET, CBF, SPECT and MRI
Unit-8 Intracranial tumors and cerebrovascular disorders: Types, causes, diagnosis, symptoms and management
Unit-9 Degenerative disorders: Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Hutington’s disease: causes, symptoms and management; cerebral trauma: closed head injuries and open head injuries: causes, symptoms and management

Block 4: Psychopathology
Unit-10 Anxiety disorders, panic and phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Unit-11 Schizophrenia: etiology, neuro-cognitive functioning and interpersonal aspects, Paranoid and delusional disorders, psychotic disorders
Unit-12 Borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, Schizoid and Paranoid personality disorders

Block 5: Clinical Intervention
Unit-13 Intervention: Nature, goals, approaches, the helping process: clinical psychologist as a person and professional; skills of a therapist: listening, leading, confronting
Unit-14 Issues faced by therapist, learning the limits: transference and counter transference, establishing realistic goals, group and family therapy
Unit-15 Intervention: Psychodrama, Yoga and meditation, placebo effect. Biofeedback, assertion training, self instructional training
Unit-16 Diagnostic value of different Psychological test: Binet, WAIS, MMPI
