To enable the students to understand the need of guidance services.

To acquaint the students with the types and qualities of good guidance and counselling personnel.

To provide information’s with regard to tests and tools used in guidance and counselling services.

To provide information with regard to organizing guidance and counseling.


Block 1: Introduction to Guidance and Counseling
Unit 1  Guidance: Concept, Principles, assumptions, issues and problems, need, scope and significance of guidance, types of guidance
Unit 2 Counseling setting and role of counselors in guidance and counseling, characteristics of a good counselor
Unit 3 Theoretical approaches to counseling, rational and purpose of guidance and counseling programme
Unit 4 Organizing and evaluation of guidance and counseling programme, ethics in counseling

Block 2: Counseling: Models and Approaches
Unit 5 Psychoanalysis, Psychodynamic, Psychotherapy
Unit 6 Behavioral therapy and Cognitive behavior therapy, approaches to counseling
Unit 7 Drama and Art Therapy in Counseling, other therapies: person centered counseling, solution focused counseling

Block 3: Interventions and Assessment in Counseling
Unit 8     Aim of counseling, family and group counseling, teacher as a counselor
Unit 9     Interview, Case history, testing
Unit 10 Approaches to counseling: cognitive approaches, the person centered approach to assessment and counseling, narrative approach to assessment and counseling

Block 4: Types of Counseling
Unit 11     Directive, non-directive and eclectic counseling, child protection and child right counseling
Unit 12 Solution focused counseling and integrative counseling, HIV/AIDS counseling, addiction/anxiety counseling
Unit 13 Cognitive behavior modification (Stress inoculation, self-instructional, self management, problem solving), depression, personality disorder, gender identity disorder

Block 5: Organizing Counseling and Guidance, Future directions
Unit 14 Developing guidance and counseling programme, purpose and organizing guidance and counseling programme
Unit 15 Evaluation of guidance and counseling programme, methods of evaluation
Unit 16 Teaching and training for counseling, future direction and research findings
